Cyberwar Intensified: Russian officials call for piracy to bankrupt Netflix

Russian officials are reportedly advocating for the mass distribution of pirated Western intellectual property, from Hollywood movies to software that is no longer available in Russia, to “inflict maximum damage” on companies like Netflix that suspended their services in Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s deputy head of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, recently called for the distribution of pirated Western content, while Vladimir Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, supported the proposal. In January, Russian lawmakers began drafting a bill that would legalize pirated content in the country.

“If they’ve left us, Netflix and others, it means we will be downloading and using this [their content] for free. I would scatter this content all over the internet to inflict maximum damage on them. Maximum so they would go bankrupt.,” Russia’s deputy head of its Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev.
